HIV/AIDS FIFTH OUT OF 291 DISEASES IN GLOBAL DISEASE BURDEN ANALYSIS

Author: Mark Mascolini

26 September 2013
In 2010 HIV/AIDS remained the fifth leading contributor to global disease burden, measured as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), in a worldwide analysis of 291 diseases. HIV/AIDS was the leading DALY cause in middle-aged people in four regions.

The Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 (GBD 2010) ranked the impact of 291 diseases and injuries from 1990 to 2010 in 187 countries, using DALYs as the measurement of disease burden. Researchers used these estimates and DALY estimates from the UNAIDS 2010 prevalence and mortality calculations.

HIV/AIDS emerged as the fifth leading cause of global DALYs in 2010. The DALY-measured disease burden caused by HIV/AIDS differed demographically and by region. But HIV/AIDS was the leading DALY cause for both men and women 30 to 44 years old in 21 countries. These countries fell into four blocks: Eastern and Southern Africa, Central Africa, the Caribbean, and Thailand.

Although these four regions accounted for the greatest DALY burden in 2010, 20% of the global HIV/AIDS burden was in countries where HIV/AIDS was not among the top 10 causes of disease burden.

“In the midst of a global economic recession,” the researchers propose, “tracking the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its importance relative to other diseases and injuries is critical to effectively allocating limited resources and maintaining funding for effective HIV/AIDS interventions and treatments.”
