Mobilizing for Impact: 2013 CGI Annual Meeting Recap

This week, President Bill Clinton, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton brought together over 1000 leaders from across sectors to "mobilize for impact" at the ninth CGI Annual Meeting in New York. Over the course of the meeting, CGI members made over 160 new Commitments to Action, which are expected to impact nearly 22.2 million lives and valued at more than $10.8 billion when fully funded and implemented. Learn more about how these commitments will improve lives and communities around the world.

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

- The first day of the meeting featured a conversation between President Barack Obama and President Clinton, as well as participation by Bill Gates, Sheryl Sandberg, Bono, Christine Lagarde, Mo Ibrahim, and more.
- On Wednesday, Secretary Clinton announced a number of new commitments to empower girls and women around the world. Sessions also focused on such topics as the CGI Haiti Action Network and "Lessons from the Front Lines of Women's Leadership."
I believe it's time for a full and clear-eyed look at how far we have come, how far we still have to go, and what we plan to do together about the unfinished business of the twenty-first century, the full and equal participation of women.
SECRETARY HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
- On Wednesday evening, the 2013 Clinton Global Citizen Awards honored seven outstanding individuals, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Malala Yousafzai. The Awards will be broadcast in the coming weeks on Hulu.
- The final day of the meeting featured an announcement of a new cross-sector partnership to protect Africa's elephants and concluded with a multi-faceted closing session that included a performance by the Esperanza Azteca National Youth Orchestra.
- To coincide with the Annual Meeting, President Clinton wrote a special piece for Time Magazine about how CGI members "mobilize for impact" around the world.
- The meeting featured a number of sessions hosted by prominent journalists and filmed for broadcast. Watch clips from Charlie Rose and Piers Morgan Live and follow @ClintonGlobal on Twitter for future air times. Exclusive full-length versions of all sessions will debut on CGI's YouTube channel next week.
- Away from the stage spotlight, CGI members worked together in intimate, focused sessions throughout Annual Meeting, workshopping new and existing commitments and identifying new potential partners. Take an exclusive look at how a select group of these sessions mobilized CGI members around specific issues.

OVER 160 NEW COMMITMENTS TO ACTION


Through these commitments:
  • Nearly 27 million metric tons of CO2 will not be released into the atmosphere
  • More than 2 million girls will be reached by efforts specifically targeting female enrollment in schools
  • More than 11.6 million children will have a better education
  • Nearly 4 million people will have increased access to health services.
  • More than $7 billion will be invested in or loaned to small- and medium-sized enterprises.
Members also reported progress of existing CGI commitments and engaged in sessions to further on-going collaborative efforts to address global challenges. To date, nearly 2,500 commitments have been made, improving the lives of over 430 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued at $87.9 billion.

RECLAIMING FUTURES Thanks to those working to help teens advertisement |  your ad here On Friday, our community's Reclaiming Futures initiative hosted a one-day conference at New Life Center in Everett, "Systems 101." In the wake of years of budget and staffing cuts and doing more with less when it comes to serving our teens, over 100 members of our community, from teachers to Judges, treatment professionals to volunteer mentors, made the time in their already busy schedules to come together to: Learn (from each other), collaborate, build cohesiveness amongst our educational, health, juvenile justice, DCFS, treatment, and youth placement programs, be inspired, and receive a call to action.
