Universal Health Coverage (UHC) What It Takes To Make It Universal

Image
Universal Health Coverage It covers both health and well-being and it means enabling people to live and produce sustainably on the planet. It means a grandmother looking after grandchildren will not have to sell all the crops meant for food to pay for hospital bills. It also means there is insurance coverage for a pandemic such as COVID or Ebola and that countries have the necessary readiness to address diseases/infections. It means humans are made aware that we live on a planet that needs being cared for if we are to be assured of quality life. It has positive and sustainable characteristics which enable individuals and organisations to thrive and flourish. It is a product that is consumable, demanded and produced. It means that a social-political-legal regime allows for grassroots to be mobilized and organized to translate policy, programming and planning into actionable life promoting practices. The policy, programming and planning constitutes the representation, characte...

On The Standard Of Dignity For All In A Complex World, A short Essay

Image
Our life lays bare the options we have before us. We have to balance our agency, autonomy and self-determination with the fact that we live in shared spaces and use shared resources.  We are called upon to be charitable while at the same time self-preservation is paramount. Agency can only be beneficial when we address those basic needs and instincts while not sacrificing altruism and a sense of community.  Community’s ingredients are diverse and this is what makes life fulfilled and fulfilling. This sets our conditions. It does not mean we have to be able to please everyone but we have to have to have standards.  We should never allow disrespect for another human being just because they are different. This then negates the principle of diversity inherent in humanity. We refrain from making judgments, taking into consideration the complexity of people's day-to-day lived situations.

2020 Is Here, Let Us Be Mindful Of Mother Earth

Image
The Earth is the single place where human beings are living side by side with other animals, bacteria, plants, gases and various materials in a symbiotic ecosystem. Australia is burning! Right there under your feet is a polythene bag, pick it up, re-use it, or make sure it is the last one you are using, we are choking our own Earth, it is only one, there is no spare one, let us look after that forest, it is a rain forest, it is a tropical forest, it is a water tower, it is full of natural treasures, the ground on which your feet stand firm, the one you use to construct houses, the one on which cities are built, be mindful, take care of Mother Earth, happy 2020!

Tips On Promoting Effective HIV Prevention Communication

Image
Part of who I am is: HIV Prevention and Control Practitioner, most specifically Prevention With Positives (PWP).  I also invested so much time in formulating and passing down health education, information and communication on life planning skills for people living with HIV. Below is one kind of awareness raising around Undetectable=Untransmitable (U=U) concept. I have noted how quickly we dismissed certain crucial parts of the U=U message. Most literature that is out there  on U=U needs to mention three important points besides U=U. The backdrop against which I can make the statement has the following characters: In cancer situations we make the claim "Cancer Survivor" for those in whom cancer signs/symptoms have disappeared. We can then say, they are in remission. Medical science has not pronounced herself on that matter as far as HIV goes. So, we must have sandwiched statements which must never get lost as we throw around the U=U mantra. We cannot ...

Image
Ngai was putting together, the immobile Mount Kenya, it took so many things, somewhere on the slopes, whose expanse extends far and wide, undulating into the Aberdares and beyond, was one place where your ancestors, made their home, the day you were born, there was a name waiting for you, that name was Kamau, the day you were born, a human being full of dignity, love and joy was made, that human being was Kamau, you were the part, destined to be mobile, you grew so fast and left a trailblazer, all over the world, you were beloved, grand in stature, magnanimous to kith, kin and strangers alike, you stretched far, wide and high, Kamau Emmanuel Mukere, Auntie Ivy, one hot Summer in Washington DC, I was a new immigrant to USA, to whom you reached out, you were in Dallas Texas, via the waves, we had a long talk, a long-winded talk indeed, I recall so many things you said, 'be defined by other than what you have,' is one of them, you liberated...

By ICASA 2021, Holding Uganda To Scrutiny: Protecting The Right To Life and Freedoms of Queer Uganda

Image
Uganda is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The beauty is in three parameters: the people, the climate and nature. In fact she is known by the following monikers: Pearl, Gifted and Source of the Nile. Uganda the beautiful and bountiful Uganda is also known for putting up model social development initiatives. They put up one of the most aggressive fight against HIV under the able stewardship of His Excellency Dr. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.  But, prejudice toward those living with HIV, LGBTIQQ and other marginalized population groups is threatening to derail so many positive social development campaigns. The Seven Asks We hope that by ICASA 2021, Uganda will also be counted as one of the African countries where LGBTIQQ are: 1. Living and enjoying their right to life 2. Able to report to security agents cases of abuse and expect to be treated equally and fairly 3. Able to enjoy the freedoms that enhance beneficence 4. Able to continue and be re...
