Trans Health Competency In Uganda: Promoting HIV Services' Uptake Targeting Transgender (TG), Gender-non conforming (GNC), Women-who-have-sex-with-women (WSW) and Men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) 2018-2023
Knowledge hubs led and run by Trans, Gender-non conforming, Women-who-have-sex-with-women (WSW) and Men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) increase their participation in mobilization drives that in turn make their communities attend HIV/TB/Malaria/Hepatitis Service spaces.
We conducted 10 Medical Camps where we have tested 10,000 people for TB and 3,000 had Positive TB diagnosis and were linked to care; we have established 50 TB Prevention Walk-in Days (10 per year X 5 years) and reached 900 health seekers out of which 270 had a Positive TB diagnosis. Our findings show a slightly higher reading than the national incidence rate of 200 per 100,000 population with a mortality rate of 35 per 100,000.
There are predictors of TB, HIV and STI among the marginalized. There is need to generate strategic plans that lead to developing gender tailored and focused TB, HIV and STI prevention interventions among Key and Vulnerable Populations.
Trans-Health Competency is needed to connect Trans, Gender-non conforming, Women-who-have-sex-with-women (WSW) and Men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) with HIV Prevalence as high as 15-28% to studies that examined the prevalence and predictors of HIV and STI.
In designing Knowledge Hubs, we have been able to improve mental health outcomes for PLHIV, HIV/STI outcomes and overall quality of life for 573 Trans, Gender non-conforming, WSW and MSM ((with 157 living with HIV: 52 Trans persons; 40 GNC; 25WSW; and 40 MSM ) who were under our cohort. We were able to seek and get support from PEPFAR and Government of Uganda to support our innovations that rely on training Viable Support CBOs into knowledge hubs.
Trans health competency promotes HIV/STI services' uptake by TB, GNC, WSW and MSM in Uganda.
