Revitalizing Self-Care Routine

Self care is many things. Bottom line: self preservation, agency, productivity and autonomy. You have the opportunity, motive and ability to feed yourself when you are hungry. Or drink up to quench that thirst. You strive harder to maintain a healthy life.

WHO published the first guidelines on

 - focusing on ways people can look after their own sexual & reproductive health, including:
•self-injectable contraceptives
•home-based ovulation predictor kits
•HIV self-testing
•self-sampling for HPV, STIs

But there is more to life. Life can become hectic. With all of our daily commitments, it can be so difficult to find time to take care of ourselves. Self care is essential to our health.

Self-care doesn't need to be difficult, there are easy steps you can take to make your own self-care routine.

Come up with a routine to make sure your body and mind are sufficiently taken care of.
Wake Up Early
Eat Breakfast
Go for a Walk
Listen to a Podcast
Cook Dinner at Home
Color or Meditate
Read a Book
Sleep

Experts advise that:

“you can experiment with different types of smoothies, oatmeal, fruit and yogurt parfaits, the options are endless. Breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day. It kick starts your metabolism and can help improve your concentration. Not to mention gives you energy to start your day off right.

Even if you work a traditional 9-5 job, you can still make time to get in some exercise. Take the stairs if you work on an upper level floor, or go for a walk on your breaks and at lunchtime.

Walking offers great health benefits, physically and mentally. If you've been having a rough day, a walk gives you a chance to clear your head and regroup.

Use your commute times to and from work as an opportunity to learn something new. There are tons of podcasts on literally every subject you can imagine. You can use your downtime to learn a new language or learn about a period of history that has always interested you.

Taking the time to cook healthy meals is an excellent way to practice self-care. With the internet it is easier than ever to find healthy recipes to make. You may even find that you come to enjoy cooking healthy meals after practicing for a while!

Be sure to end your night on a good note, and do an activity that you enjoy. Coloring, meditating, taking a bubble bath or reading a book are all great ways to wind down after a long, hectic day.

Self-care is about taking time out of your day to focus on your needs. You need to take care of your body and mind, because if you don't do it nobody else will!

These are just some simple ways to incorporate self-care into your daily routine without drastically changing your lifestyle. You can customize your own self-care routine to fit your personal needs.”

A friend adds:

When you go for a short or long call ( number 1 and 2), take time and go slow. No one is running after or chasing you out of the washroom.

When you shower, scrub yourself slowly do not rush. Rinse off all lather from the shampoo or soaps you use.

When you apply lotion all over your body, take time to rub it in the toes, heels, armpits, hands and hair.

When you do your laundry, take time to fold your clothes, iron those you need to and stow away neatly. That is self care.

Do you like watching movies? It is a good habit. Pop those corns, get a bowlful, sit back and enjoy your fav movie.

Smile!
